We are Human pops up again!

Less than two weeks after we last stumbled across a photo of the We are Human picket sign doing work, here it is again!

Seen on: http://justarandomhero.blogspot.com/

The photo is from a graduation/rally in support of the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act, better known as the DREAM Act.
If you haven't heard of it, the Dream Act is described as a proposed bill that would "provide certain undocumented immigrant students who graduate from US high schools, are of good moral character, arrived in the US as children, and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment, the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency.".

These are mostly kids who were brought here as children by undocumented parents, and have lived a good part of their lives in the United States. They are as American as the next guy in everything except status, and want to be a contribution to the country by getting higher education and/or serving in the military.

This goes against the stereotype of the "illegal alien Anchor Baby" who only wants to drop out of school and live off taxpayer's money, so you'll hear a lot of opposition to his bill. These are kids with ambition who want to make the best out of being in this great country.

You should definitely check out the Dream Act site and learn more about it.

NOW AVAILABLE, BUY NOW!!! Angel Gonzalez: Da Street Corner

This Friday the 19th we will be releasing Angel Gonzalez's debut silkscreen print, titled "Da Street Corner". This print measures 18x24 inches, one color metallic gold and the screens where shot in the sun using a hand cut rubylith, hand cut by Angel which took him 25 hours, talk about HECHO CON GANAS. Angel is an artist who now operates out of Los Angeles but he originates from Washington Heights, Manhattan NYC. Angel draws on his experience of growing up in NYC during the early years of hip hop (early 80's) and the evolution of what we now call classic hip hop (Tribe Called Quest, Eric B and Rakim, Gangstarr, etc). Although Angel never participated in Graffiti, his style is strongly influenced by late 70's early 80's New York graffiti mixed with some modern day influence from his favorite artist Daim and many others. This print goes out to preserving the 4 elements of hip hop. This print is an edition of 26 for 55USD.

El Mac Print Teaser

Printed at Self Help Graphics in East LA.
I am speculating that El Mac will eventually post it for sale on his website but what I know for sure is that this print will be for sale at the Self Help Graphics print fair along with my Ruben Salazar print and hundreds of other prints. More info on flyer below El Mac's print.

Self Help Graphics & Art started with a small group of artists working out of a garage in East Los Angeles in the early 1970's, dedicated to creating art that reflected the cultural values and spirit of the local Chicano community. SHG is a nationally recognized center for Latino arts that develops and nurtures artists in printmaking. SHG seeks to advance Latino art broadly through programming, exhibitions and outreach to diverse audiences in East Los Angeles and beyond. SHG seeks to identify and engage young and emerging artists from the community in all aspects of its activities.

Compa Con Ganas

This weekend I went back to el Pedorrero Muffler shop where I first met and photographed Pacheco (Compa Con Ganas) to give him some SP's (Subject Proofs). He was really excited and he told me that he was happy that I even considered him to be a subject in my work and I told them that I love making images of my heroes but also of my people that keep things running with their hard work, dedication, honesty and sincerity.  Below is a photo of Pacheco holding his print.

We Are Human sighting

Looks like the "We Are Human" picket sign, that was designed for the May Day marches as part of the Immigration Reform movement, has made another appearance. We came across this photo from the annual "Dyke Day LA" march this past Saturday on LAist.com.
http://laist.com/2009/06/15/la_dyke_day.php

Great to see that someone held on to the sign from the marches, and that it's versatile enough to appear at another struggle to recognize our equality as humans.

(From the Immigrant Rights marches in Phoenix, May 2009)
