As a response to the passing of Arizona bill SB1070, I have teamed up with my friends at NDLON.ORG to create a media based campaign by the name of ALTO ARIZONA. SB1070 is the toughest anti immigrant bill in the history of this country. This bill allows law enforcement to stop and search any person that they have "probable suspicion" might be "illegal" statewide. So probable cause is out the window and racial profiling is now legal in the state of Arizona. This bill is going to make it open season for law enforcement to harass people with brown skin and an accent, which is NOT OK. Iam heading a full on art campaign for ALTO ARIZONA. I got the pleasure of creating a piece for Mexican American hero Astronaut José Hernández for the CHIRLA 2010 GALA. It was amazing to meet him and be able to present the award to him on stage. Another thing that was great was that I had the honor to be presented by Arturo Rodriguez, who is the current UFW President and has been since Cesar's passing. Arturo is married to Cesar's daughter and if it wasn't for his energy I don't know how I would of gone through my five line speech without having a nervous breakdown. All and all it was an amazing experience to be able to meet José, who is a great example of what parental support and GANAS could do for someones journey in life.

R.I.P. Jaime Escalante. Your GANAS will always live.

There was a time in East Los Angeles when el maestro’s gruff voice bounced off his classroom walls. He roamed the aisles, he juggled oranges, he dressed in costumes, he punched the air; he called you names, he called your mom, he kicked you out, he lured you in; he danced, he boxed, he screamed, he whispered. He would do anything to get your attention.
“Ganas,” he would say. “That’s all you need. The desire to learn.”
Nearly three decades later, Jaime Escalante finds himself far from Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, the place that made him internationally famous for turning a generation of low-income students into calculus whizzes. Twenty-two years have passed since his classroom exploits were captured in the film “Stand and Deliver.
He is 79 and hunched in a wheelchair at a cancer treatment center in Reno. It is cold outside, and the snow-capped mountains that crown the city where his son brought him three weeks ago on a bed in the back of an old van remind him of his native Bolivia.
He can’t walk. He struggles to eat. Stomach acids have burned his vocal cords, reducing his voice to a whisper. The doctors who diagnosed his bladder cancer told him recently he has weeks — at best a few months — to live.
But don’t let the frail man fool you. The teacher is not done teaching. Behind his large square glasses, that intense, mischievous look that once persuaded students to believe in themselves still lives in his eyes. He smiles at nurses, flashes a thumbs up.
When asked about his former students – the engineers, lawyers, surgeons, administrators and teachers now spread across the country — he wastes no time. He steals a nearby pen and slowly, in capital letters that have now grown faint, begins to write in Spanish:

RECAP PHASE 1: White Walls SF Solo Show/ MTN Colors Sponsorship

Hey guys its been a while since I've posted on here, so long that I have to split recap into several posts. As some of you may know the HCG crew (JLG, Abraham) including myself have been knee deep in the Immigration Reform issue since our boys Zack De La Rocha and Marco Amador first brought us out to Maricopa County to see first hand what was going down and to protest in solidarity with our people from the area against the Injustices of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. This past January 16 the crew and I went out there for about a week and went to work, cutting stencils, making signs, helping out with press, holding workshops with the youth, and finally the icing on the cake was the PROTEST. The protest was amazing because prior to this march the largest amount of people in attendance in past demonstrations where roughly around 10K and this time even though the media down played our numbers we where about 20,000 people deep, and in every color, age, political party, etc. Within these numbers where some influential people that shared their spotlight in solidarity with the movement which include Zack De La Rocha, Linda Ronstadt, Lil Joe y La Famila, and the powerful Dolores Huerta. Alot of you may not know this but Dolores is the actual person behind Si Se Puede (Yes We Can) that the great Cesar Chavez is known for.

A big shout out to La Carmencita for housing us and Art Felix for rolling with me and being a great roadie.

Also a HUGE shout out and thank you to Sandra Casto Solis, Orlando (dude on the shirt), Jojo, Diane, Erika, Bryant, Chandra, Billy, Evie, Tupac, Sal, Caleb, Gigantico, Rafa, Xochitl, Axan and anyone else I forgot to mention, Thank you for all your enlightenment, good vibes, and making Phoenix my third home even in a police state.

Today is my good friend Juan's birthday and it is a must that i give him a shout out here at HECHO. Juan has been the webmaster of this site so far and has managed to help out when we needed it even with a full time job and ton of personal projects in process so we thank him for that. Juan is one of my closest friends and one of the many "MASTERS OF THE DABBLE" I know. Throughout our friendship we somehow figured out that we where dabblers and as we went for it we morphed the definition of dabbling to something more fitting as to what we where doing. So here it is, to us a dabbler is a person that figures out to get what they want or need regardless of funds or reputation, to us a dabbler is a person that can flex what little resources they got and make what ever they want happen. In the past five or six years Juan has photographed many famous people, musicians, politicians, cardinals, etc... very rare did he have an official press pass or was actually working for a magazine. Juan dabbled his way into these situations and opportunities. On one occasion Juan and I found out on a thursday night that Obama would be speaking at the San Diego Convention Center the following Saturday just 2 days away, so we thought there is no way that we will get press passes in this given amount of time so we didn't even bother calling up magazines or press, instead we drove down friday night and saturday morning we managed to sneak our ways in to watch Obama speak. THE DABBLE is in many ways related to GANAS, because if you really want or need something you could use GANAS to somehow make it happen. So back to Juan, below are some photos that Juan shot that I really love and a sneak peek into the future: a print HCG will publish that juan designed from a photo he shot of our hero ZDLR. word- e

Cesar Chavez and Thurgood Marshall Don't Belong in History Books

Well, that's what a panel of 6 "experts" hired by the Texas State Board of Education are saying. The BOE is looking to update their social studies curriculum, and are determining what they feel kids need to learn about in their textbooks, and what they don't.

They are proposing cutting out Cesar Chavez, a man who fought selflessly for the rights of the American worker, and is regarded as one of our nation's greatest civic leaders. One of the experts, Evangelical minster Peter Marshall said it would be "ludicrous" to have Cesar Chavez "listed next to Ben Franklin". Another so-called expert, David Barton, said that Cesar Chavez "lacks the stature, impact and overall contributions of so many others." What?!

They are also proposing excluding Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American to serve on the Supreme Court, who argued for victory in Brown v. Board of Education which led to desegregation in schools. They say Marshall isn't a "strong enough example" for Texas students.
The board and it's appointees complain about an "over representation of minorities" in American social studies standards.

This is a complete outrage that these Fundamentalists want to erase the contributions of minority figures to the United States. This shouldn't even be an issue of whether or not they are minority. They are very important Americans, period.

New Cantinflas Print

One of the greatest entertainers in the world, Mario Moreno "Cantinflas", was not only a comedian and actor but also an activist who used his status to help those in need. Often referred to as 'the Charlie Chaplin of Mexico', Cantinflas' signature mustache and costume not only represented the underdogs of Latin America but those of us with ganas. In his movie roles, Cantinflas challenged social status, authority and identity with a tenacious noncomformist attitude. His influence reached across the world, especially impacting the teatros that spread the message of the Chicano Movement in the 1960s.

One of my favorites films is 'El Analfabeto' where he plays an illiterate who receives a legal letter telling him of a big inheritance from his late uncle. He goes to a pharmacy to see if the pharmacist can read him the letter but is quickly embarrassed by a young girl who already knows how to read. He then decides to go to school and learn how to read for himself. There are several plot points but as in any Cantinflas movie, his honesty and ganas pays off in the end.

Less than two weeks after we last stumbled across a photo of the We are Human picket sign doing work, here it is again!

The photo is from a graduation/rally in support of the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act, better known as the DREAM Act.
If you haven't heard of it, the Dream Act is described as a proposed bill that would "provide certain undocumented immigrant students who graduate from US high schools, are of good moral character, arrived in the US as children, and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment, the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency.".

These are mostly kids who were brought here as children by undocumented parents,and have lived a good part of their lives in the United States. They are as American as the next guy in everything except status, and want to be a contribution to the country by getting higher education and/or serving in the military.

This goes against the stereotype of the "illegal alien Anchor Baby" who only wants to drop out of school and live off taxpayer's money, so you'll hear a lot of opposition to his bill. These are kids with ambition who want to make the best out of being in this great country.

This Friday the 19th we will be releasing Angel Gonzalez's debut silkscreen print, titled "Da Street Corner". This print measures 18x24 inches, one color metallic gold and the screens where shot in the sun using a hand cut rubylith, hand cut by Angel which took him 25 hours, talk about HECHO CON GANAS. Angel is an artist who now operates out of Los Angeles but he originates from Washington Heights, Manhattan NYC. Angel draws on his experience of growing up in NYC during the early years of hip hop (early 80's) and the evolution of what we now call classic hip hop (Tribe Called Quest, Eric B and Rakim, Gangstarr, etc). Although Angel never participated in Graffiti, his style is strongly influenced by late 70's early 80's New York graffiti mixed with some modern day influence from his favorite artist Daim and many others. This print goes out to preserving the 4 elements of hip hop. This print is an edition of 26 for 55USD.

Self Help Graphics & Art started with a small group of artists working out of a garage in East Los Angeles in the early 1970's, dedicated to creating art that reflected the cultural values and spirit of the local Chicano community. SHG is a nationally recognized center for Latino arts that develops and nurtures artists in printmaking. SHG seeks to advance Latino art broadly through programming, exhibitions and outreach to diverse audiences in East Los Angeles and beyond. SHG seeks to identify and engage young and emerging artists from the community in all aspects of its activities.

Compa Con Ganas

This weekend I went back to el Pedorrero Muffler shop where I first met and photographed Pacheco (Compa Con Ganas) to give him some SP's (Subject Proofs). He was really excited and he told me that he was happy that I even considered him to be a subject in my work and I told them that I love making images of my heroes but also of my people that keep things running with their hard work, dedication, honesty and sincerity. Looks like the "We Are Human" picket sign, that was designed for the May Day marches as part of the Immigration Reform movement, has made another appearance. We came across this photo from the annual "Dyke Day LA" march this past Saturday on LAist.com.

Great to see that someone held on to the sign from the marches, and that it's versatile enough to appear at another struggle to recognize our equality as humans.
